Abstract. The article publishes (for the first time) the letters of A. M. Linevsky to L. Ya. Sternberg (1926–1927), and presents photographs of their handwritten originals. It is these four letters that the author of the article considers particularly important, since they marked a certain milestone in the fate of Linevsky as a researcher. Two letters (1926) were written before and two (1927) after the discovery of Besovy Sledki petroglyphs, which led Linevsky to the field of archaeology. There are also excerpts from his letters to A. Ya. Bryusov (1927–1929), which will allow the reader to get an idea of the first steps of A. M. Linevsky in the study and deciphering of Karelian rock carvings, which followed immediately after the discovery of petroglyphs on Shoirukshin Island by a novice ethnographer.
