Prehistoric Archaeology. Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies (PAJIS) is a biannual peer-reviewed interdisciplinary academic journal in continuous publication since 2019. It appears under the aegis of the Institute for the History of Material Culture, the Russian Academy of Sciences. The journal is devoted to prehistory, being primarily focused on the study of the Stone Age and Early Metal Period cultures, their environmental contexts, and interactions between the former and the latter. Articles are published in either Russian or English.

The archaeology of prehistoric period — the period for which we have no written records — is the most distinctive branch of archaeology. Both in its methods and objectives it is somewhat farther from history and closer to natural sciences, particularly those that study the past. Like the latter, prehistoric archaeology knows no absolutely exact dates, has to invent names for its objects of study (artifacts, sites, cultures), and deals not so much with events, as with these objects as such and with processes of their change in time and pace.

To develop successfully each science and art needs its own special periodicals, and it was with this purpose that PAJIS was created. The journal poses basic questions in the study of prehistory and reflects the more interesting and significant tendencies in archaeology and the other fields of study which it entails. It is open for submissions from various fields in prehistoric archaeology and related disciplines, including Quaternary geology, paleogeography, paleogenetics, physical and cultural anthropology. Though submissions must essentially be oriented toward evidence-based contributions presenting original research results, materials submitted to PAJIS may also include analytical reviews of literature presenting recent discoveries, reviews examining the latest ‘burning’ questions of prehistory, as well as information regarding new publications (book reviews) and the debates surrounding them.

We hope that the results of our efforts will be met with interest among colleagues and we invite the collaboration of all who have something to say and are able to do so professionally, coherently and with interest.
