Resume. This is the first publication of a work written in the 1960’s — early 1990’s by a prominent Russian archaeologist Alexander Alexandrovich Formozov (1928–2009). Here, he reflects on some of the most controversial problems faced by archaeologists and prehistorians, including stages and tempos of history, the beginnings of humanity, the roles of a person in relation to different societies. In conclusion, the author addresses the question of how prehistoric archaeology can contribute to a better understanding of Russian history.
