Abstract. The collection of bifaces from the Derbina bay consists of about 150 intact objects, fragments and half-products coming from six localities. The earliest of the latter (Ust-Maltat II) dates from the end of the Malokhetsk phase, and the latest one (Ust-Maltat I) appears to contain mixed materials of the Sartan time. The oldest bifaces tend to be made of split pebbles and big pebble flakes (Ust-Maltat II), while most of the later ones are on large blades and blade flakes (Derbina IV and V, Pokrovka I, Ust-Maltat I and III). The most representative collection of bifaces (110 items) was obtained at the site of Derbina V which has two cultural horizons dated to the end of the Konoshchelsk cooling and to the Gydan stage of the Sartan period. The collection is dominated by symmetrical and asymmetrical forms with a combination of oval-pointed or oval-oval ends. The narrow ends of the symmetrical tools are hypothesized to have served as the working edges of points (knives), whereas those of the asymmetrical tools might have been used as hafted parts of axe-like (?) tools. The production of the described bifacial tools shows a high degree of standardization.
